My empire of dirt...

Hung over to fuck. Pool comp yesterday, I won 9 games on the bounce before I finally succumbed to the liquor and had to go home..
Anyhu, I've just got coffee and am gunna get on with the chicken coop.. got the mesh on yesterday and picked up more timber and the clear corrugated plastic cladding...
B is down in auckland again, gets back this arvo so I've also house work to do...
In the evenings last week I finally got the bedroom windows painted. For the first time ever ( when not spraying) i masked off the glass. I don't normally bother as the paint often bleeds through the tape anyway and scraping is still required. It has bleed through in a few spots but overall I think it has led to a neater finish and given I'm putting 5 coats of paint on, it's sped up the process .
I've got the cladding to prime up through this week and next weekend I shall be mashing the front wall out of the master bed, re-framing, installing window and re-cladding. Should be able to achieve that in 2 days ...weather permitting..

Few pics then off to work..

Got a bit more done on the coop today.
A mates mrs popped in for a look this morning. She asked if I could make her the same for her place. I said yes but it will cost ya around 3.5k.. she's not so keen now...unbelievable but we are at about $1300 for materials and 40 -50 hours labor...
That said, I see no reason this build won't survive 20 plus years..
just the plywood side to do now and painting . Don't have to paint as everything is treated but I want it to match the house and garage..

You know Dat!!! That said, eggs are nearly a dollar each these days, around 10 bucks a dosen. We gunma have 5 or 6 chooks. So will probably get 20 ish eggs a week .we won't make money but we will save a Lil over time, have lovely home grown eggs a plenty and left overs to barter with... we already have neighbors we swap fruit and veg with so this will work out well....that and both me and b like keeping chooks, they can be very entertaining.

Is there a patch of roof that is opaque so that there is shade available for the chickens? Or is the plyboard wall North-facing and will provide enough on its own?
I see from the pics that you get sunshine there at least one day in the year.

Fantastic looking build, I have to say (y)
Aye, cracking build cocker, take years and many chooks to re 'coup' 🤭 your costs

Yes, when the ply is on the box it should provide enough shade, but if not we will put some shade cloth up. I'm also gunna paint the underside of the plastic roof section that is over where the roost /nesting box area is.

I'm just thinking that it's inevitable that B will eventually move you into the coup and I hate the thought of you cooking your brain under a hot sun.

You and I occasionally think alike! It's not visible in the pics but I have installed an underground bunker beneath the coop, complete with beer fridge and enough toilet paper to last a week or 2... come the revolution, I'll be safe as fuck. B may perish ...

I had a coop a bit like that at my old house. But it was full of ferrets, not chickens. Ferrets are much smarter and more entertaining than hens but their eggs are fucking awful.

And ya don't want one down ya trousers.. a ferret that is.. that said, ya probably don't want a chicken down ya trousers either!
They (the ferrets) would often go up my trousers from the bottom end if I wasn't wearing wellies. And if I was they'd do their best to clamber down inside them. A dark trouser leg looks like a rabbit hole to a ferret and they will be determined to investigate. On cold winter mornings they'd climb up my arms and pile inside my padded shirt for a warm up. I'd muck them out and change their bedding with six little heads poking out of my shirt neck.
All my ferrets were very good natured and well handled but they've got some sharp claws when they're trying to climb up your shins.
My old cob polecat liked to wrap himself round my neck like a scarf and he'd have happily stayed there all day if I'd let him.
