My empire of dirt...

If you have chickens, you have rats. Occasionally they eat the eggs but mostly target the food. You should invest in a proper feeder. You will get more trouble from stoats but they are not as common as rats. Chickens like their nesting boxes to be above ground about 300-400mm and they like a roosting bar. Also the size of the nesting box should be considered as if it is too big they will stay in there and trample the eggs. There is a guy at waikaraka who sells 6 week old shavers. They are machines!
I forgot about stoats! Probably coz I've not seen one since i was about 8 yrs old..
Dad chopped it in half with a spade..
Last chickens I kept were at ngunguru Ford road. Horrible silver fuckers. They was antisocial Lil raptors. When they got out ya couldn't get em back. I had a chicken chicken, a red shaver, she was like a sheep dog, I'd use her to round up the silver Guinnesss and bring em back to the run...
Anyhu, they had no roost or nothing, just a plywood box on the ground for nesting in which they slept on top of at night.. this time I'm being more humane as my brothers are not involved...
They will be happy. Or die..that's my moto these days...

I would be tempted to put chicken mesh on the floor under those sleepers. The rats will find their way under there.
Putting meah on the ground, even if under the dirt can be bad for the chickens feet as they like to dig. If a rat wants in it will get in despite ya best efforts but tbh they are of no great concern, I've never lost a chicken to a rat.. they may steal some food but that's no big deal.

Fucken weather... trying to get this coop finished before B gets home Monday evening but it pissed down all day Saturday. Got some done but not much...

Got a bit more done today. Got my mate 15 year old boy in to help. He's fucken useless but a good laugh.. he shifted the dirt and chippings and did a few other bits n bobs.. painfull to watch and so uncoordinated. I'm sure at his age I was way more on the ball but maybe I wasn't.. I struggle to see how he will get a job anywhere in the near future!!!
He's taking the dirt of the trailer with a shovel, he's put the wheel barrow about 10 feet away and is walking back and forth. So I tell him to put it closer to the trailer. He does but puts it behind him so now has to do a 360 with every shovel load. So I tell him to put the barrow in front of him. He does and is amazed how much easier it is.
Next up he's emptied half of the dirt and now decides it's easier to get on the trailer to get the rest. The shovel has a 5 foot long handle and the cage of the trailer is just under 5 foot so he's struggling to turn around with shovel in hand. Can't work out it needs to be on an angle or that you don't need to be on the trailer at all as the shovel has a long handle!
Anyhu, we got somewhere..
Just need to put the roof on, build the roost and nesting box, make a few doors, pit mesh on and paint everything!!!

Also i planted a rosemary bush in there that I've had from a seedling in a pot for 4 years. It was root bound and I've read that the chickens won't destroy it and rosemary is good for their respiratory system. Gunna track down a pineapple sage as well as they won't destroy them either and they smell real nice...
My velociraptors tear rosemary plants to shreds but I'm sure your chickens will be better behaved.

There are different types of rosemary. This one is the bush variety. Apparently the chickens won't smash it. Apparently... we shall find out! I like this variety as it has hard branches that can be used a skewers, bloody good on the bbq...
I might take some cuttings off it jic the chooks fuck it up....

True dat! Although this one is enthusiastic at least but by god he is daft!!!
He has extreme adhd, not the pretend type either. He is genuinely a good kid though with respect and compassion, another few rarities these days. Fucken good Lil pool player as well, if he can learn to focus he could be a fantastic player.
Got him to mow the lawn a few months back, gave him a Lil demo and told him i wanted nice straight lines. Thought coz he's mad as fuck he might be one of those that gets obsessive compulsive and would do a mean job. Not a fucken chance.. it was like aliens on acid done surrealist crop circles in the back yard. Not a straight line to be seen and patches missed everywhere...
Bless him....

B got back from the big smoke this afternoon. Was hoping to have the chicken coop finished as a surprise for her but unfortunately I've managed to turn this task into a major ordeal as per me... anyhu, it's nearly done ish and she is happy...
Bring on the chickens!!!! In a few weeks when it's finally finished...
Done the concrete and got the roof on today and most of the framing but run out of time and timber. Believe it or not there is still probably 2 days work left in it! Still gotta do some cladding, mesh , make a few doors and paint. .
. ......

Get yourself set up with a night scope

last time I went rat shooting was 40 odd years ago when I was 13 ish. Me and 2 buds of a similar age had a mates old man's guns, a 303, ak47 and a shot gun. It was midnight at a dump out in the sticks, a few miles form any homes. When we let rip you could see all the lights of the fame houses many miles away come on , obviously thinking ww3 had just started.. do you know what happens to a rat when hit by any of those weapons? I don't as I don't think we hit fuck all but we did use a fair bit of ammo....

Post moved to the Cross Channel Migrants thread.
A high powered rifle would be better for that. Take an inflatable out a few clicks of shore. I don't know why this isn't happening. Along with everything that floats being destroyed in France before it even gets to the water.. there is no resistance these days. It's not even difficult, the likes that are coming over on these boats would turn for the right money. Proof of destruction of a dingy pays a few hundred quid.. the greedy fucks would strand themselves in France for the right money....

I understand Serco securely transports the disposable blow up boats back to calais for further use 🙄

Communist revolutions require strong actions from activists whilst keeping a population mostly docile and passive. You have to have a certain amount of unrest but not let it get to the point where anger and action is directed in the "wrong" direction.

I don't believe you understand what a delicate balancing act this involves.

I agree. In fact I don't understand any of it..
In world war 2, patriots that spoke French would be dropped into and be embedded in france, risk their lives to stop the imminent invasion and do what ever it took. Now most can't even be bothered to protest and those in charge are welcoming the invasion. No sir, I don't understand it at all....

If you had actually gone to school, you would have learned all about this kind of thing.

*cough*
