Nuclear explosions look like this right after detonation.
It’s one of the most haunting images of the nuclear age – a fireball frozen in time during the 1952 Tumbler-Snapper test series in Nevada.
The image was taken using a rapatronic camera, developed by MIT engineer Harold Edgerton and his team at EG&G. These cameras used a magneto-optic shutter to achieve exposure times as short as 10 nanoseconds – one hundred-millionth of a second. Because each camera could capture only a single frame, multiple units were arranged around the test site to record the explosion in sequence, frame by frame.
This particular image reveals a rare effect known as the “rope trick” – glowing spikes of plasma shooting downward as the fireball vaporizes the guy wires tethering the test tower. Far from a photographic glitch, this phenomenon offered crucial insights. Physicist John Malik studied it to better understand how different materials behaved under extreme heat and radiation.
Captured in an era when nuclear weapons were still tested in open air, these images reflect both the scale of human ambition and the precision of the science behind it. Rapatronic photographs remain some of the most extraordinary high-speed images ever made – stark reminders of a world transformed by the atom.

Pythagoras Cup, the Cup of Greed
‼️

One of the inventions of the Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras 2500 years ago
Known as the Cup of Greed, it is a clever and entertaining vessel engineered to hold the perfect amount of water,
If you add too much liquid, you lose all the water
But when you make a cross-section, its mechanism is revealed and it is no longer an ordinary cup!!
Physically, the Pythagoras Cup is an example of the theory of communicating vessels

A 31-year‑old Indian man was admitted to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi after experiencing intense abdominal pain. He had inserted a live 66 cm eel into his rectum, reportedly seeking heightened stimulation. The eel had migrated into his large intestine and began biting through the wall.
Doctors initially used a probe to retrieve the eel via the anus, but their efforts were obstructed by a second object: a lemon, also inserted into the rectum. Both complications necessitated an immediate laparotomy to prevent fatal intestinal perforation.
During abdominal surgery, the eel was extracted alive through an incision, and the lemon was later manipulated and removed intact from the anus. Surgeons repaired the perforated colon and thoroughly cleansed the contaminated abdominal cavity.
Postoperatively, the patient was fitted with a stoma bag and informed that it would be permanent. Medical officials emphasized that without swift surgical intervention, the man would have likely died.

This has made me...

On September 8, 2002, French snowboarder Marco Siffredi reached the summit of Mount Everest (8848.86 m). But getting to the summit wasn’t his only goal — he had a bold plan.

He wanted to snowboard down the Hornbein Couloir, a steep and dangerous route that no one had attempted before.

After saying goodbye to his Sherpa, Phurba Tashi, Siffredi pointed his board toward the edge... and disappeared into the abyss.

He was never seen again.

....well one less annoying snowboarder... I bet he was a cyclist aswell.
