Entered the first carp club match at one of my membership waters today. I won first, second and third and biggest fish as I was the only person that landed a carp. 
The match was extended by 3 hours due to no one having caught a fish and I caught not long after.
12lb 7oz £80 prize money.

Very well said and applies to so many things in life.
I struggle with getting people to understand this simple concept. All my life I would ask my father to come fishing or bike riding or hunting or whatever, but he would rather mow the lawn or sort his tools or even wash the walls of the house, now he is 85 years old and has to take care of my mother full time, he has few fun memories just thoughts of when he should have come along and did not. We all think there is much more time yet we all know it is more likely there is not. Memories are all we really have, if they are gone, so are we really, and you have to make more good memories than just the things we must do in life. The only good life is one full of fun memories, no one will look back on their life and say, I regret having fun that time.
Paul tells me that Carp are becoming more of a sporting fish here because of the fight. Otherwise we usually just see Asian people fishing for Carp...to eat. I've never caught one. I did catch a Dog Fish(Bowfin) once. About 4 lbs. It straightened out a big treble hook in the process. That was fun.Entered the first carp club match at one of my membership waters today. They are estate lakes where I fish that belong to Hardwick Hall. The carp were originally stocked as a food source for the monks I believe. There are some very old carp in the lakes like these two that I caught last Monday when practising for the match.
Two more great fish, looks like you have a great spot, must be a whole lotta fun bring them in to shore. I am back to work and the wife type person is back from Philippines so my fishing has slowed a bit for now, BUT, the little woman has told me to register the bikes so we can go riding. What more could you want in a wife?

They can get damaged and hard mouthed. The places I fish are very strict on fish care and we all carry carp kits and treat any injuries to fish. I am very careful with the fish I release. I make sure to recessutate them after a long fight especially on hot water days. I use the smallest hook possible and even wear wet fabric gloves to reduce the amount of slime that gets removed from the fishes body. I am also very aware that this is a living creature with a steel hook i. its body so I take great care to do as little damage as possible. So far this year I have landed over 200 fish and only one had to be killed because the hook got its gills
On the waters we fish we use barbless hooks, have to have at least a 36” landing net and an unhooking mat or cradle to lay the fish on whilst removing the hook.
No photos while standing and the fish must be held over the protective mat/cradle.
Cradles and fish have to be wet regularly while the fish is out of the water and the fish has to recover in the water before being released.
Carp don’t tend to need much recovery time but Pike and Barbel need a lot longer.
It's so sweet that you guys are so caring towards the fish. ❤ Nobody stomps on their heads and throws them to the pelicans?! I don't do that but my mother-in-law doesn't like Northerns and grabs them by the eyes. That's how she avoids getting bit by them. I feel sorry for them. I let Paul take them off my hook(so I don't get bit)...and that's if I can get them in the boat before they bite the line and escape.

My dad being from Gozo(the second island from Malta) i grew up with the killing of animals for the eating and not for the the hell of it. I will let anything living do it's thing even wasps
pain in the ass here in the summer months. Thre is no life without death and no death without life, it is the balance of things. Yin and Yang and all that, as i get older there is no balance at the moment, to much bad in the world!!
Things in life are changing all the time, there is no linear route as it is all in constant change.
Barbless hooks and unhooking mats are compulsory on most waters now and hopefully that will soon be all waters very soon. It would help if they stopped making barbed hooks, no need for them.
Large landing nets and slings should also be a no brainer. Overall fish welfare is increasing all the time which can only be a good thing but sadly there's still a small element who don't seem to give a shit or are totally clueless.
When I was younger, I did some things that I thought or was taught was correct but have learned to change. These fish are not much different from a puppy or kitten, they are living creatures that we are interacting with in their enviroment. They should be treated with as much care and respect as any living thing deserves. I have confronted many so called fishermen that were throwing the "garbage" fish into the bushes. I asked them what they think the "good" fish eat. Humans think there is some form of unlimited amount of fish in the lake so killing 10 bad fish will equal 20 more good fish to take their place but if you kill all the rodents in a field, the snakes, hawks and foxes have no food and then the field has nothing to offer for resources and eveything loses. People do horrible things without a thought of the consequences, that is why I dont even keep any(or very few)of the fish I catch. I cant catch a 10lb bass if I kill/keep every 4lb bass I catch, but if I release them unhurt, they can grow to be caught again, much larger. Humans usually destroy everything then move onto the next place to destroy that area the same way and then complain they cant catch anything good. Sorry for the rant but I just dont like much of human behavior
