Today in 1982 somewhere in the Atlantic, HM Submarines SPARTAN & SPLENDID are receiving their orders to commence war patrols of the Argentine coast and shadow any major warships of their Navy.

They are informed not to attack without permission from London and not to escalate the conflict whilst a diplomatic solution might be found. Both submarines spend the entire conflict submerged and watching but never firing a shot in anger.

Whilst they have sailed from Gibraltar and Faslane respectively, another submarine is preparing to sail south, HMS CONQUEROR will receive the same orders at first but as the war unfolds, she will mark her name in history.

I had a meal out with friends at the weekend and the guy who organised it is a submariner on a nuclear sub.
Not a job I’d enjoy.

An old school mate of mine was one of the sonar operator on the Conqueror and targeted the Belgrano.
