I turned 18 in 1989. I was just really getting into the whole street/race bike sceen, dirtbikes were my life. Once the 916 was launched, I had never seen such a little bike with performance of the big 1000's. I was poor so I wandered along on my 1985 FZ750, then a 1987 Yamaha FZ700 because I like the full fairing better than the 750's half fairing. I tried a 91 ZX6 and a 86 VFR750-- all good but nothing really special. About this time Ducati launched the 999, I loved it on the track but the street version, only viewd in print, was shocking to me especially compared to the 916 I really wanted.
I finally got to a point financally where we actually had more money coming in than we were spending and they wife said I could buy a new bike! I did not want anything new and she agreed on the 916 as long as I did not spend too much. Well every single 916, 996, 998 I could find was either way over priced or they were super high miles. After 6 months with no luck finding no reasonable priced 916 series a friend of a friend told me about a 999s for sale at a decent price and he knew the previous owner well and assured me the bike was mostly used for this guy to ride to work in a suit and tie.
I went and looked over the bike, it needed valves checked, new belts, new brakes, new tires and oil and other fluids changed. She only had just under 6000 miles so was due for a costly dealer bill so it was traded in for a 1098s. I was floored at the beauty of this bike in person. To this day I still just stare at it at times and since I dressed her in the Fila gear, several people have walked right past my friends 999Xerox and another friends 749R to take pictures of my bike. Mine is just an S version and the other 2 bikes a proper R models, guess you cant beat the fila colors on a racing fairing.
Well I took my father up with me the next day with several thousands in cash(did not want to risk not taking the bike right then and there so I brought cash) and purchased the bike and rode it home in sub freezing wether on sand filled roads. The dealer I bought it from nearly had a heartattack because he was afraid he would get robbed with all the cash I paid him, he was expecting a simple check!
Well that is how I found my first Ducati
